Black lens, White lens: Hollywood & Scandals

Watching the Cosby show when I was growing up help change my life for the better. TV hasn't been good to people of color. People of color have been portrayed to be rapist, killers, ignorant. It is a negative perception which the media has perpetuated, leaving people of color with the hate, prejudices, and stereotypes that were already going on all across America. When the Cosby show was introduced to America, it gave people of color a perspective of what a Black family would look like, if it wasn't broken. What a Black family could to be and do with the right tools and resources. I remember my favorite episode was when Theo told Cliff that he wasn't going to school anymore because he felt like he could make it in life without going to school. Cliff followed that statement by getting fake Monopoly money and showing his son all the expenses that came with living on your own. The Cosby show came along in a time where the Black family structure was suffering. The backlash to Civil rights movement created an atmosphere where a lot of people in America was still mad that things were integrated. People of color never had a chance to recover from all the pain and oppression this county created.

The Vietnam War started the breakdown of the black family structure. While people of color were fighting a war they didn't belong in, the US was allowing drugs and guns to be poured into Black communities. So people of color went from being labeled as slaves, then we were free but didn't have the same equality as white people, and then they accused people of color of being criminals and drug dealers. This further made the perception of people of color worse. Then after all of that the government declared a war on drugs and that leads us to our current status where people of color are the highest ethnicity in this country to be locked up and do jail time. My point is that the perception of people of color has never been accurate because our perception has always been altered. So that this country could continue to oppress us mentally, physically, and spiritually. It started during Slavery, the country used the Church to sanction slavery. Jim Crow was created by the people to further the perception that people of color were inferior. After the government allowed racism to be institutionalized in all systems that could eventually be used against us. Jim Crow allowed the states to control what happens in their territory. The same things is happening now, the state is in charge of their police, the education system, programs that are supposed to help the people. Instead the state allows all of these systems to work against people of color. Our schools lack funding, the police are killing us each passing day, the resources available don't help our people, they just hinder us. Unemployment is still at an all-time high for people of color. My point is that television shows like, the Cosby Show, gives people of color motivation and ambition to be their best self to this very day. Do you ever wonder why a show like the Cosby show never came on again? Do you know that Bill Cosby was going to buy NBC? It's a lot of stuff they owe the public is not seeing. If you can I would suggest that you still go purchase all of the seasons of the Cosby show. We might not never see another show like it again.

I don't know Bill Cosby, if he did rape those women he was wrong and should pay for that. For some strange reason this situation reminds me of the fall of Michael Jackson. At the prime of his career allegations were brought up on the King of Pop saying that he was a child rapist. After that the media made Michael Jackson to be crazy and the media continued until all the love the world had for the King of Pop turned to hate. After the King of Pop died those same children said that they were never touched by the King of Pop and their parents told them to do it. All the allegations that were said about the King of Pop was found out to all be lies. My point is that nobody is perfect. When I looked at the newspaper the other day, it had a picture of Bill Cosby and it said America's Rapist. You know this country makes sure that when people of color do something wrong that the whole world knows. Bill Cosby hasn't even been convicted of a crime yet. I wonder why they don't publicize when people of color being killed, I wonder why they don't talk about why people of color don't have resources like affordable housing, better schools, better communities. The media only talks about people of color on a regular basis when they can impugn the integrity of the whole race. As I said before I never met Bill Cosby but if he did the things he's being accused of then he should get help and has a very serious issue. The person I did get to know was Cliff and the rest of the Cosby family. I remember when the Rodney King riot was going on a news reporter told people of color to go in the house and watch the last episode of the Cosby show. The Cosby show is an example of a Black family structure that has yet to be seen on television again. Instead we have shown like the Bad Girls Club, or Love and Hip Hop. Those shows don't show the best In our people it shows the worst and that's what the media wants you to see. This county has committed a lot of atrocities against people of color. It feels like this county has a secret agenda to keep people of color disenfranchised. Don't let them diminish the legacy that Bill Cosby created, he changed the life of millions of people of color. I will never forget what the Cosby show did for my life, I pray you don't as well. One more thing if you declare yourself an American then you have to take on the death and destruction that comes along with this county. Don't forget they hung us like fruit in a tree, they beat us, raped our women, killed our children, took away our names, rights and beliefs. Yet people of color still forgive this country and live in it, as if were not once treated like cattle on the street.

Charlie Sheen knew he had HIV and still had sex with women, all his shows are on the air. Woody Allen is an alleged child molester and they still play his movies and I think he just got a new TV deal. Stephen Collins from the TV show Seventh Heaven confessed to sexual abuse of underage girls and the shows he was in still come on television. It's not weird to you that Bill Cosby has not been convicted of any crimes and they took the Cosby show off the air. Maybe it's just me but something is wrong with this picture, I'm not saying that Bill Cosby is innocent but I'm also not saying that all of those women are telling the truth. It seems to me that the media is focusing on Bill Cosby's morality because he has not been proven guilty of giving women illegal drugs. The focus is that it was immoral of a man of that statue to partake in these type of activities. The thing is that was a very long time ago, I'm quite every human being can say they indulged in some things they were not supposed to be doing in their twenties. If we are going to hold Bill Cosby to that bar, we have to hold the other people in Hollywood that have been convicted of real crimes but has not suffered the same consequences as Bill Cosby. No disrespect to anyone but until he is proven guilty I will continue to support Bill Cosby. FYI the same media that we listen to give us information is the same media that exploits and disrespects our whole race on a regular basis. No man or women has the right to give anyone a drug without their consent, having sexual intercourse with somebody that is under the influence of drugs is wrong as well. This is my point until he gets convicted of a crime I'm not going to let the media dictate to me how I should feel about a person. To be honest the media only shows us what they want us to see, knowledge is power, why would they give the people that they are helping keep oppressed real knowledge that can help them. Open your mind and wake up.
